Food For the Hungry
In my quest to help the kids see how blessed they are, I lined up a few things for us to do as a family this Christmas to give back a little. One was to volunteer at a local school that puts meals together for people in our community that can't afford their own Christmas dinner. Wasn't sure how it would go over, but I was so thankful the kids went and really pitched in. Grace and Maddie were given tape guns. Scary, I know. They helped put flyers in and tape up boxes that were full of food and ready to go. I stood by to make sure Maddie kept all 10 fingers intact and didn't tape the box sideways and upside down. Daddy and Caleb were part of a group that loaded the boxes onto a truck to take to a warehouse that would deliver the meals the next day. It was so humbling to see what went into those boxes and that was all these people would have to eat for Christmas. It was loaded with lots of food, but really put into perspective how much food most of us consume on a day like Christmas and don't even think twice about it.
We'll see if this sank into my children's little heads and hearts. I'm trying so hard this year and from this point on to really get them to see that although Christmas does include gifts and fun things, it is about so much more than that. Trying to find that healthy balance between Christmas trees and Jesus. We're getting there. Baby steps.
